American Cancer Society's New Stance on E-Cigs

The American Cancer Society has taken a new stance on e-cigarettes. The non-profit organization has announced that it believes e-cigs can be a successful tool to help people cease combustible cigarette use and has declared that doctors and other health professionals should not discourage smokers from switching to e-cigs. While the ACS does not go so far as to state that e-cigarettes are completely harmless, they do reinforce what many people have been saying for a long time: e-cigarettes are certainly less dangerous to users than traditional tobacco cigarettes are.

The ACS strongly endorses staying on top of the latest science. Right now, the latest science is saying that e-cigs are less harmful than cigarettes, and the ACS believes that clinical policy should be reflective of this fact. According to their press release, “Individuals should be encouraged to switch to the least harmful product possible; switching to the exclusive use of e-cigarettes is preferable to continuing to smoke combustible products.”

This clear endorsement of the value of e-cigarettes as a smoking cessation tool is in line with current developments around the world. In the United Kingdom, as well, health organizations are promoting e-cigarettes as a harm reduction device. Myths and negative stereotypes about e-cigarette use continue to be proven wrong as information disseminates, in large part thanks to organizations like the American Cancer Society using their platform to help share facts.

History of the American Cancer Society

The ACS was founded over a century ago in 1913. Originally named the American Society for the Control of Cancer, or ASCC, it was comprised of just fifteen physicians and businessmen in New York City. At the time of its founding, knowledge about cancer was obscured by a climate of silent fear. The ASCC’s objective was to raise awareness and to arm the populace with the facts. Nowadays the organization has a multitude of aims, but clearly, one of them is still to provide the people with information.
