An Introduction to Sub Ohm Vaping

When you press the fire button on your e-cigarette, it sends an electrical current through the coil. The stronger the current, the hotter your coil gets, and the more vapor you can produce. The easiest way to increase the current is to increase your e-cigarette’s power, or voltage. However, there’s only so much power you can put through the coil before it overheats, burns your wick, and leads to an overall unpleasant vaping experience.

The workaround to this problem is decreasing the resistance. In doing so, you get more current without increasing the voltage. Sub ohm vaping is the process of vaping with a coil whose resistance is less than one ohm. It’s aptly named!

The Science

Remember learning about ohm’s law in high school science? Yeah, we don’t either. Here’s a brief refresher. The current, which helps you achieve vapory goodness, is defined as the voltage divided by the resistance. Therefore, if you want to increase the current, you can increase the voltage, or you can decrease the resistance. Sub ohm vaping is the latter option.

The Pros and Cons

In addition to getting more vapor, sub ohm vaping leads to warmer and more flavorful vapor. Unfortunately, it uses more e-juice and drains the battery quicker. It also may require you to alter the way you inhale because of the greater volume of vapor and also because sub ohm vaping leads to a greater throat hit. If you really don’t like the throat hit, you can combat it by using an e-liquid with a greater percentage of vegetable glycerin (VG) versus propylene glycol (PG).

Difference in Inhaling Technique

There are two ways to inhale vapor. The first is to hold it in your mouth briefly and then inhale it into your lungs. The second is to simply inhale it directly into your lungs. If you’re sub ohm vaping, you’re going to get too much vapor for your mouth to handle and will need to inhale directly into your lungs. This requires taking a deeper, extended breath.

Nicotine Levels

Because you take in way more vapor when you sub ohm vape, your body absorbs a lot more nicotine than you do when vape normally. It’s therefore normal to use an e-juice with a relatively lower level of nicotine if you’re going to sub ohm vape. Make sure you start low and find a new comfort level if you’re switching to sub ohm vaping. Otherwise, you could be in for quite an unpleasant vaping experience.
