Vaping Etiquette for Considerate Vapers

Whether you’re a seasoned vaper or you’re just about to take a hit from your very first e-cigarette, everyone can use a briefer on vaping etiquette. Here are some handy do’s and don’ts with regards to vaping and vape culture.

Regarding Where You Can Vape

  • Use common sense. You’ve probably never tried to vape on a city bus. Why? Because common sense dictates that that’s inappropriate. In general, your intuition is a good guideline.
  • Ask the proprietor if you’re on private property. Some pubs, even pubs that strictly enforce no-smoking rules, allow vaping. It varies from owner to owner. If you’re unsure, simply ask someone who works there what the custom is.
  • In public, only vape if you’re in the open air. Walking down the street? Cool. Sitting in the public library? Not so cool. Not everyone likes the vapor from e-cigarettes, and public spaces are everyone’s spaces.
  • When in doubt, assuming that vaping rules are the same as smoking rules. If you’re allowed to smoke somewhere, you can probably go ahead and vape. But if you can’t, don’t be so sure.

Regarding What to Do When You Do Vape

  • Don’t blow clouds of vapor in people’s faces. If you followed the rules in the above section, you should be able to find somewhere to exhale without infringing on someone’s personal space.
  • Promote vaping to smokers, but don’t be obnoxious about it. Nobody likes a zealot. Be honest and open about how vaping works for you, but don’t cross the line into acting like a snob towards those who still choose to smoke. It’s not the best way to convince someone else you’re right, anyway.

You may be asking yourself why vaping etiquette matters. One thing to consider is that vaping is not yet as regulated as smoking is, but as it becomes more prevalent, it likely will start to be. Following these unwritten rules will portray the vaping community as being conscientious and considerate in the eyes of the general public, and policies might be more vape-friendly as a result. And that’s good for everyone.
